Don’t Tell Me I Cannot Do Something

My inspiration for this proposal came from observing the people who were using the Brixton Sport and Social Club, whether for the Soup Kitchen or the Domino Club. It seemed to me that they were seeking protection, a place that belongs to them and where they belong. They didn’t had it easy but they won’t let anyone mess with them. They would seize any opportunity to make things better. To me “Don’t tell me I cannot do something” illustrates that determination, with a slight bit of humour. The title is inspired by the movie Back to the future, 1985, in which the main character always mentions this phrase whenever he is told he is a wimp. The sign is placed right at the front of the property and is facing the road, speaking directly to whoever passes by. It’s a bold statement of confidence, and resilience.
